Exeter Takes Down Mifflin to Capture Boys Volleyball 2018 BCIAA Title
Rivals Exeter and Gov. Mifflin slugged it out for five sets before the Eagles prevailed 15-13 in the final game to win their league-best 10th championship and first since 2013.
"Amazing," said sophomore settter Reese Ganter. "We've been working so hard for this, and all these guys that put in so much time all season, for all of it to pay off and get these medals and this trophy, it just means so much."
The Eagles (14-2), out of the playoffs the last two seasons, made their return count by winning their 12th straight match. With a rotation of mostly underclassmen, Exeter had less experience than the senior-laden Mustangs (14-5), who were in their fifth straight championship, but stayed focused on their task.
Exeter won the first and third games 25-18 and 25-20, using 6-0 and 7-0 runs to pull away. Mifflin took the second and fourth games, 25-23 and 25-21, behind key kills from Jonas Conner and Casey Klahr, to set up the fifth game.
The teams went point for point to a 7-7 tie before Exeter ran off four straight. Reese Ganter had the first three on a block and two back-row kills, and a Strauss kill made it 11-7. The Eagles led 13-10 before two hitting errors got the Mustangs back within 13-12. The teams traded the next two points before the Eagles won it on Strauss' 13th kill when he tipped the ball over a block to an open spot.
