Exeter Repeats as BCIAA Champs!

Exeter win championships at BCIAA Individual tourney.   Eagles are repeat champions, DeSanto wins third straight title.

It also was a night of repeat performances for Exeter, which won its second straight team title and had five individual winners, including four who had won at least once before.

Exeter's Austin DeSanto captured his third straight title in impressive fashion. DeSanto won the 132-pound title with three straight first-period technical falls, outscoring his opponents 57-9 in just over a total of three minutes.

In the finals, DeSanto defeated Daniel Boone's Jack Zummo 20-3 in 72 seconds.

But it was just another day at the gym for Exeter, which also got titles from Ryan Watts at 113, Tyler Bagoly at 170, Dennis Karas as 195 and Oscar Daniels at 285.

Bagoly, Karas and Daniels all won their second straight titles.

Exeter finished with 223.5 points. Gov. Mifflin was a distant second with 182 points and three champions. Wilson was third with 135 points and two champs.

"It feels good, but I'm looking forward to the postseason," Bagoly said in a refrain often spoken by Exeter coach Jon Rugg.

It was the third tournament title of the season for Exeter, which also took home team trophies from the King of the Mountain and Conestoga Valley tournaments in December.

Karas scored a first-period fall over Tulpehocken freshman Zach Ruffner, who in the semifinals knocked off Oley Valley's Charles Wildermuth, a 2016 PIAA Class 3A qualifier.

Daniels scored a technical fall over Brandywine's Michael Hubble, racking up a 23-8 lead in the third period.

Watts scored a 3-1 decision over Twin Valley's C.J. Morton.  Bagoly defeated Wilson's Tommy O'Brien 2-0 in a rematch of last year's 160-pound title bout that Bagoly won 3-1. Overall, Bagoly defeated O'Brien for the fourth time in a low-scoring match with the only points coming on a second-period reversal.

"It's a lot of hand fighting and good positioning the whole time," Bagoly said.
