Berks Scholastic Field Hockey Preview

With teams changing divisions, new coaches coming on board and the PIAA expanding to three classes, the 2016 field hockey season will have a different look. To get prepared for the all the changes, here are five things to watch this fall:

1. Twin Valley's encoreFor the second straight year, Twin Valley has lost the Berks County Player of the Year.

And for the second straight season, the Raiders are looking to move on without skipping a beat. It sure worked out pretty well last year.

With three-time Player of the Year Ashley Hoffman ending her career after the 2014 season, the Raiders returned in 2015 to win the school's first PIAA Class AA title.

That was with the leadership of 2015 Berks Player of the Year Kelee Lepage, who has moved on to the University of Maryland.

But don't feel too bad for the Raiders, who went 27-2 last season and also won Berks II and Berks County titles. They have plenty of talent returning, led by senior Hannah Menge, another Maryland recruit who earned All-Berks honors last year.

"It's going to be hard to fill her spot," Twin Valley coach Kim Walsh said of Lepage. "But all these girls returning learned so much from her and know what it takes to get to that level."

Three others starters - including Liberty University recruit Kendra Jones - are gone from last year's team. But the Raiders have plenty of firepower up front and another Division I recruit - junior Kara McClure - as they move up to Berks I.

McClure tied Menge for the team lead with 23 assists last season to go with seven goals.

"We have a lot of good players still here," McClure said. "I think we're going to do pretty good this year."

The offense likely will center around Mikenna Allen and Riley Knapp, who scored 21 goals each as freshmen last season. Knapp scored the first goal in Twin Valley's 3-1 win over defending champion Villa Maria in last year's PIAA Class AA title game.

"They both play club and they both have been playing a lot this past year," Walsh said. "They'll do really well. It helped to have Kelee there to direct them, but I think they learned a lot from that too. They can do their own thing for sure. They can just score goals. I think they'll come back and be just as good if not better than they were last year."

The Raiders also return Abby Romig (seven goals, five assists) and Ashlynn Lennon (three goals, seven assists).

"We still have a pretty good team chemistry," Walsh said.

2. Oley freshman's debut

Oley Valley has had more than its share of great players and Division I college recruits.

But few, if any, have generated the type of buzz that Sophia Gladieux has before she has played her first varsity game.

As a rising eighth grader, Gladieux received the 2015 Field Hockey Joel Ferrell Outstanding Performance Memorial Award at the AAU Junior Olympics. In club hockey for XCalibur, she often plays up an age group or two.

"She definitely is demonstrating a very high level for her age," said Oley Valley coach Tiffany Cappellano.

Just how Gladieux and other incoming freshmen fit into the Oley Valley program is another question.

The Lynx won the Berks III title last year during a 16-6 season in which they had just one senior and started 11 underclassmen. Leading scorer Samantha Buzalewski and Shannon Lackey earned All-Berks honors. Four others were selected to the all-division team in Berks III.

"We always said that we like quality over quantity," Cappellano said. "This year we have both."

The Lynx will be tested with three tough games in the first five days. They open on the road Friday against defending Berks I champion Exeter, travel to play 2015 PIAA qualifier Boiling Springs Saturday and host perennial state power Crestwood, a PIAA semifinalist last year, Tuesday.

3. Eagles keeping flight

Few people outside Reiffton expected Exeter to contend for Berks I and Berks championships last year. The Eagles were coming off a 2014 campaign in which they tied for last place in the division and won just three games.

With the help of 10 seniors and a few talented freshmen, coach Lisa McCoy and the Eagles won the Berks I title and advanced to the county championship game. This year, Exeter won't be surprising anyone.

"I think we'll be able to hold our own," said McCoy, who enters her fourth season at Exeter. "We definitely plan on keeping the program moving forward."

Peyton Halsey, a rare freshman All-Berks selection last season, returns with sophomores Katie Roper, Ariana Kline and Rachel Richards. Halsey led the Eagles with 15 goals last season to go with six assists.

Senior Sarah Musselman, an All-Berks softball pitcher last spring, also returns after scoring 12 goals last season.

McCoy pointed out that Exeter has just four seniors on this year's team.

"There is definitely talent," McCoy said. "We have a challenging year ahead of us."

4. Division realignments

and reclassifications

With realignment of BCIAA divisions and an added PIAA class this season, the Berks division races and postseason tournaments will have a new look.

A new champion in Berks II is assured thanks to realignment that has put 2015 division champion Twin Valley in Berks I.

The Raiders join Exeter, Daniel Boone, Gov. Mifflin, Reading High and Wilson in Berks I.

Muhlenberg, which won the Berks I title in 2014, has dropped to Berks II to join Berks Catholic, Conrad Weiser, Fleetwood, Hamburg and Schuylkill Valley. The five teams in Berks III - Brandywine Heights, Kutztown, Oley Valley, Tulpehocken and Wyomissing - remain the same.

The District 3 Tournament will have a new look with 14 teams qualifying in Class A, 16 in Class AA and 10 in Class AAA.

Brandywine, Hamburg, Kutztown, Oley, Schuylkill Valley, Tulpehocken and Wyomissing are among the 30 District 3 teams in Class A.

The 34 Class AA teams include Berks Catholic, Conrad Weiser, Daniel Boone, Fleetwood, Gov. Mifflin, Muhlenberg and Twin Valley.

Only three Berks teams - Exeter, Reading High and Wilson - are among the 24 District 3-AAA teams.
