Eagles deliver on high expectations, claim Berks softball title

Before the first pitch this spring, Exeter players set a goal of bringing the Berks Softball League championship back to Reiffton.

Mission accomplished.

Exeter completed its run through the BCIAA Tournament Thursday night in Lyons with a dominating 11-4 victory over Muhlenberg to win the school's first county softball title in 12 years.

"It feels great," said winning pitcher Sarah Musselman. "I think the team worked so well together to achieve this goal. There were definitely high expectations for our team this year."

Those expectations grew when the Eagles started the season with seven straight wins en route to their first Berks I title since 2004. But Exeter, a team with just one senior, didn't wither under the pressure of being tagged the team to beat.

"I think they had in their mindset it's just another game," said Exeter coach Dan Wegman. "I said that yesterday and again today, 'girls you're just playing the game you love.'"

Sophomore catcher Haley Kisamore capped her torrid hitting in the top-seeded Eagles' three playoff wins with a bases-clearing triple. For the tournament, Kisamore went 5-for-7 with three triples, two home runs and 10 RBIs.

"We came in with a lot of energy tonight," said Kisamore. "That pretty much came from the (semifinal) win we had against Wilson. It was a great win for us."

Kayla Evans, Exeter's only senior, sparked the Eagles with a leadoff triple in the first inning and scored when Musselman reached on the first of four Muhlenberg errors. Evans scored two runs as Exeter (18-3) defeated Muhlenberg (14-8) for the second time in three games this season. -
